Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going. If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart. That is why I advise our boys to read stories and watch movies more and to learn more beautiful phrases to tell girls.
The Internet is shaping the way new generations date. Facebook , Skype , Whatsapp , and other applications have made remote connections possible. Online dating tools are an alternate way to meet potential dates. The average duration of courtship before proceeding to engagement or marriage varies considerably throughout the world. Shanghai marriage market Patterns of dating are changing in China, with increased modernization bumping into traditional ways. One report in China Daily suggests that dating for Chinese university women is “difficult” and “takes work” and steals time away from academic advancement, and places women in a precarious position of having to balance personal success against traditional Chinese relationships.

Meteorology[ edit ] The National Weather Service defines Santa Ana winds as “Strong down slope winds that blow through the mountain passes in southern California. The Santa Anas are katabatic winds —Greek for “flowing downhill”, arising in higher altitudes and blowing down towards sea level. Any low-pressure area over the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California, can change the stability of the Great Basin High, causing a pressure gradient that turns the synoptic scale winds southward down the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada and into the Southern California region.
This cool, dry airmass sweeps across the deserts of eastern California toward the coast, and encounters the towering Transverse Ranges , which separate coastal Southern California from the deserts. The airmass, flowing from high pressure in the Great Basin to a low pressure center off the coast, takes the path of least resistance by channeling through the mountain passes to the lower coastal elevations, as the low pressure area off the coast pulls the airmass offshore.
The air has already been dried by orographic lift before reaching the Great Basin, as well as by subsidence from the upper atmosphere, so this additional warming often causes relative humidity to fall below 10 percent. During Santa Ana conditions it is typically hotter along the coast than in the deserts, with the Southern California coastal region reaching some of its highest annual temperatures in autumn rather than summer.
These result from precipitation on the windward side of a mountain range which releases latent heat into the atmosphere which is then warmer on the leeward side e. If the Santa Anas are strong, the usual day-time sea breeze may not arise, or develop weak later in the day because the strong offshore desert winds oppose the on-shore sea breeze. At night, the Santa Ana Winds merge with the land breeze blowing from land to sea and strengthen because the inland desert cools more than the ocean due to differences in the heat capacity and because there is no competing sea breeze.
Santa Ana winds often bring the lowest relative humidities of the year to coastal Southern California.

A guest at the April 5 pheromone party at the Cinefamily takes a whiff. As the LA Weekly reported , the April 5 event involved dozens of lively singles mobbing tables stacked with unwashed shirts, where they grabbed the shirts, sniffed them deeply and commented on the fragrance. Like a speed-dating seminar, only with lots more shirt-sniffing. Prays , a filmmaker and rapper from Long Beach, came up with her idea a couple years ago, and the first and only other pheromone party was held a year and a half ago in New York.
Both that one and the recent event at the Cinefamily apparently resulted in a lot of hook ups — though it remains to be seen how permanent the relationships will be. Humans, it seems, need more than a complementary taste in movies to bond well romantically:

Houston – Dallas Sunset Limited: For a brief time it appeared the “Big Four” might actually have to share the state’s transportation services with this independent railroad. Such an unthinkable scenario proved short-lived, though, when they purchased the original Southern Pacific on September 29, Beyond, it passed through the San Joaquin Valley reaching Modesto November, , Fresno May, , and Bakersfield November, before dispatching its first train to Los Angeles then a town of less than 10, residents on September 5, As the work trekked south, surveyors ran into a major problem 32 miles outside of Bakersfield, the Tehachapi Mountains.

The line reached the summit at 4, feet although its most endearing feature lay nine miles below where a sweeping loop allowed Hood to keep grades manageable while gaining an additional 77 feet in elevation.
